We not only encourage Internet2 members to share their achievements with the community, but also the interesting people, events, developments and collaborations that make those achievements possible. Students, staff and researchers at college campuses throughout the nation, and participating institutions through regional, national and global research and education partner networks will benefit from a faster and more secure connection, thanks to a new peering arrangement between Microsoft Corp. and Internet2, the nation’s premier research and education network.

Showcase Image Internet2 and Networking Industry Partners Juniper Networks, Ciena and Brocade, have announced the 2013 Innovative Application Awards. Launched in 2012, the new Internet2 Network is the first open, national-scale 100G network employing software defined networking (SDN) and OpenFlow standards. The awards program will grant cash prizes of up to $10,000 to the best open source, end-user applications that make use of the OpenFlow-enabled SDN capabilities of switches and controllers like those found on the new network. The desired outcome of the awards program is the creation of production-quality software that can operate on Internet2’s Advanced Layer 2 Service and take advantage of the SDN and 100G capabilities of the Internet2 Innovation Platform. The program complements application development efforts by US Ignite. Follow the contest on Twitter at #innovativeappaward.
Showcase Image An advanced data and communications network facility in Singapore has been unveiled by Internet2, global networking partners and several leading Internet2 member universities. The new facility promises advanced network and computing services and applications for research and education. It also adds to the regional network hub serving Asia-Pacific locations operated by Internet2 partner SingAREN, and serves as a connection point for Internet2’s advanced video services.

Showcase Image On Wednesday, April 24, at the 2013 Internet2 Annual Meeting, Alexander (Sandy) MacDonald, chief science advisor for NOAA's Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research, discussed advances in climate change research and efforts to predict and explain climate change. Dr. MacDonald holds the patent for Science on a Sphere®, a luminous, animated globe installed in museums around the world to educate the public about Earth and other planets. The globe was on display for demonstrations and media interviews.
Showcase Image On Tuesday, April 23, at the 2013 Internet2 Annual Meeting, G. Wayne Clough, Smithsonian Institution secretary, provided new details about the Smithsonian's amazing effort to digitize and share its treasures with scholars, researchers and others around the globe. Secretary Clough also announced the Smithsonian’s work to leverage the Internet2 Network and Smithsonian expertise to provide exceptional educational programming to diverse and expansive audiences, especially students.
Showcase Image On Monday, April 22, at the 2013 Internet2 Annual Meeting, John J. DeGioia, Georgetown University President, Samia Melhem, World Bank lead information communication technology policy specialist, and Peter Balleis SJ, Jesuit Refugee Service’s international director, spoke about "education at the margins." They described how technology, volunteers and advanced networks are enabling organizations to deliver education to students in areas at the margins of society, such as refugee camps, remote villages, war zones and areas lacking civil society.

SIP services powered by Aastra and Level 3 are in the Early Adopter phase, and there's plenty of excitement about this cost-effective alternative to traditional voice services. Showcase Image EDUCAUSE and Internet2 have announced that Courseload, CourseSmart, McGraw-Hill Education and more than 50 publishers will participate in a Fall 2013 pilot to give campuses nationwide a further opportunity to explore, evaluate, and advance the transition from traditional media models, including textbooks, to electronic platforms. A webinar will be held on March 4 with more details.

Showcase Image The National Science Foundation recently announced the availability of funding for second round of its Campus Cyberinfrastructure-Network Infrastructure and Engineering Program. This year’s solicitation offers two types of awards: Data Driven Networking and Infrastructure for the Campus and Researcher awards (up to $500,000 total for up to 2 years), and Network Integration and Applied Innovation awards (up to $1,000,000 total for up to 2 years). Both awards share a deadline of April 3, 2013.

The first Internet2 Annual Meeting will convene R&E leaders from institutions around the world in an environment of open engagement, partnership and collaboration. Showcase Image Internet2 is pleased to announce the opening of their new West Coast office in Emeryville, CA. Internet2, a close partner with technology leaders and innovative networking companies, will now have an office near its West Coast members to assist industry and higher education. internet2 will continue to influence the direction of technology companies from e-textbooks to Big Data scientific research.
Showcase Image Manhattan School of Music (MSM), an Internet2 member, is now hosting Internet2 staff offices and videoconferencing facilities in its Anderson Hall. This collaboration builds on cultural programming with MSM's Global Conservatory, and augments New York-based activities, including MANLAN support. Read more about this partnership.
Showcase Image Once again, the Asia Pacific Advanced Network (APAN) and Joint Techs meetings will converge in Honolulu to form the TIP2013 joint conference, January 13–18, 2013, hosted by the University of Hawaii. By bringing these meetings together, TIP2013 encourages greater global dialogue, facilitates technical collaboration across the Pacific and provides an important discussion forum for issues of concern to R&E network stakeholders in this region and around the world. TIP2013 will feature workshops and tutorials on Sunday, followed by three full days of presentations and meetings to the entire group. Thursday and Friday will be filled with more workshops, side meetings and demonstrations.

On December 4, 2012, anyone and everyone is invited to participate with researchers, educators, engineers, students and vendors in what we hope will be the biggest Megaconference ever. The theme this year continues where the last one left off. "Breaking Down the Barriers: Global Connections." Showcase Image Thanks to those who joined Internet2 in SC12 Booth #1042 for exciting talks and demonstrations using NOAA's Science on a Sphere (SoS), Indiana University's WorldView, and the new Internet2 100G Network. Speakers using the SoS included Dr. Phil Webster (NASA) and Dr. Jill Gemmill (Clemson), in addition to NOAA's Beth Russell and local NWS forecasters; Dr. John Horel (Utah) employed the WorldView for his visualizations, as did Ed Balas (IU).
